Clown Ban In French Town After Street Attacks

Clown
Clown Ban In French Town
A town in southern France has banned people from dressing up as clowns after a spate of attacks in several parts of the country.
There have been a number of assaults by people disguised as fake, "evil" clowns. Some of those wreaking havoc on the streets have been armed with pistols, knives or baseball bats. The incidents include one where a youngster hit a passer-by 30 times with an iron bar in Montpellier. He was jailed for four months.
Vendargues, which has a population of about 6,000 and is near Montpellier, is believed to be the first town to impose such a ban. The decision was made by the mayor, and official Bruno Giraudo said France wants to "avoid any disruption... by evil clowns". He added: "It's about protecting children by preventing any ill-intentioned clowns from mixing with residents."
Police say people have increasingly reported spotting clowns "outside schools, but also on public roads, in bushes, in a square". Officers have arrested more than a dozen teenagers following the attacks.
The attacks have even sparked anti-clown vigilantes, forcing officers to step in to try and quell growing hysteria.
A rule on the town's website said the ban was "absolute" on Friday night, Halloween, and will be in force throughout November for everyone aged 13 and older. Any teenager wanting to dress up as a clown in November will have to ask for official authorisation.
Last week, a 19-year-old received a six-month suspended jail sentence for threatening passers-by while dressed as a clown in the town of Bethune. On Monday, a 14-year-old dressed as a clown was arrested near the capital Paris for attempting to attack a woman.

Chickens have gotten ridiculously large since the 1950s

Here are three different breeds of chicken, raised on the exact same diet:

The one on the left is a breed from 1957. The middle one is a 1978 breed. And the one on the right is a commercial 2005 breed called the Ross 308 broiler. They're all the same age. And the modern breed is much, much, much larger.

In just 50 years or so, chickens have been bred to be much bigger. The image above comes from a study done by researchers at the University of Alberta, Canada, who raised three breeds of chickens from different eras in the exact same way and measured how much they ate and how they grew. This allowed them to see the genetic differences between the breeds without influences from other factors like food or antibiotic use. They recently published their results in Poultry Science.

What breeding has done to your chickens

1) Chickens today are much bigger than those in the 1950s: This one's pretty obvious. The 2005 chicken breed on the right ended up being about four times as heavy, on average, as the 1957 breed on the left — despite being fed the same foods.

2) Chickens today are more efficient at turning feed into meat: The reason for that is that modern-day chickens are more efficient at turning feed into breast meat. The researchers' metric for this was something they called the "breast conversion rate" of grams of feed into grams of breast meat. The 2005 breed was roughly three times as efficient as the 1950s one.

3) Modern chickens also have extra health problems: Previous research has noted increased bone, heart, and immune system problems in some contemporary chicken breeds. Health problems could come from several factors, including both unintentional genetic effects and behavioral differences such as diet and carrying around all that extra weight.

4) But the growth of chickens has helped make chicken a popular food: Over the past few decades, chicken has become a much cheaper food. And Americans have been eating more of it. (The price of poultry has risen at about half the rate of other consumer goods from 1960 to 2004.) In 2013, Americans consumed more than 83 pounds of chicken per person.

According to the Poultry Science paper, our ability to breed bigger, more efficient chickens had played a big part in that.

Turkeys and the terrorism

A wild turkey in Millstone Township, New Jersey dive-bombed a house and then destroyed part of the interior. This past Monday at 3:00 a flock of turkeys was observed casing a residence. At some point, one of the turkeys crashed into a window and broke into the home. New Jersey State police were immediately called. Trooper Richard Pogorzelski entered the home to see if the perpetrator was still lurking about but upon inspection realized the wayward bird had made a getaway - though not a clean one.
According to the home owner, "The bird had relieved himself all over. The room was a disaster." The bird did about $500 in damage to the bedroom of the homeowners' son, 8 year-old Jake. Perhaps not coincidentally, "jake" is what young male turkeys are called by human beings. The infiltrating jake found resident Jake's new $60 Abercrombie & Fitch shirt which he planned wearing to the family's Thanksgiving dinner and pooped all over it. The boy's mother said, "I don't know if it's salvageable."
