The brawling Australian yabby will never walk away from a fight, even after a loss.In fact, a new study shows he will immediately take on his conqueror for a rematch and proves he does not forget the face of his foes.
The two-year study by University of Melbourne zoologists of more than 100 pairs of yabbies showed the species Cherax destructor can remember and recognise the faces of individuals, specifically its opponents.
Professor David MacMillan, head of the University's department of Zoology, said this was a remarkable capacity for the invertebrate species of yabbies and freshwater crayfish.
"This is an ability known in humans and some vertebrates but in only a handful of invertebrate species," said Prof MacMillan, who led the research.
In the study, the loser yabbie was isolated after a fight and given the choice for another stoush against its previous opponent or a new crayfish.
The loser yabby moved toward the opponent it recognised rather than the new rival, showing a capability of visual identity rather than just an acute sense of smell.
Prof MacMillon said that the yabbies used highly variable cues such as colour and face width to recognise their foes.
"Careful observation by our team showed that the facial recognition is the important area for recognition of yabbies during and after a fight," Prof MacMillan said.
Prof MacMillan said the new research may lead to bigger things.
Understanding how simple nervous systems recognise features may contribute to developing feature recognition in robots, he said.

Baby falls through train toilet

A BABY girl born on the toilet of an Indian train survived after falling down the metal tube onto the tracks. The mother, who was seven months pregnant, fainted in the toilet, resulting in the 1.4kg (three-pound) baby slipping down the tube.
The newborn crashed onto the stones between the steel tracks and sleepers and was found by rail workers.

Doctors said her condition was stable.

"In just 12 hours after the unthinkable incident, she is coming out quite well," paediatrician Raj Kumar told The Times.

The girl has yet to be named by her 33-year-old mother, who was travelling with relatives from their home in Rajasthan state to the western city of Ahmedabad for a hospital checkup.

A teenager caught going twice the speed limit in the US has faced the ultimate punishment – he's been publicly shamed by his mum. Adam Clark was pulled over doing 107mph (172km/h) in a 55mph (88km/h) zone.

After the cops had done with him, his mother, Heidi Wisniewski, not only took his car away, but also made him a sign to show outside of his school every morning and every afternoon.
Now Adam will spend the next month holding the sign which says: "I was STUPID. I drove over 100 mph and got caught. Thank God! I could have killed me and my friends."

Swedish state to sell sex toys

Sweden's state-owned pharmacy chain, Apoteket, has said it plans to help satisfy Swedes by adding sex toys to its shelves.
The one-year sales trial will start in June at 50 selected Apoteket stores around the country, they said on Thursday.
It was not clear what type of products would be available.
Apoteket said customer surveys had showed that many Swedes found Apoteket a natural vendor for sex-related products.

Angry wife burns 400 mobile phones

In a fine example of a considered and proportionate response to relationship troubles, a spurned Chinese wife set fire to more than 400 cell phones owned by her and her husband after he walked out on their marriage, a news agency reported Friday.

The official Xinhua News Agency said the 37-year-old woman, identified only by her surname Wang, was arrested for arson.

The couple had owned a successful retail phone business in Weifang, the eastern province of Shandong. However, their shaky relationship hit rock bottom when her husband left her on March 3, the news agency reported, citing the local Qilu Evening News.

'Robin Hood' Banker Jailed for Fraud

A former bank executive who was said to have "Robin Hood" mentality has been sentenced to 41 months in federal prison for taking money from some accounts and repaying others, as well as pocketing some of the money for himself.
The judge at Friday's sentencing hearing also ordered Thomas J. Mariotti, 37, to repay more than $691,000 to his former employer and to Tall Oaks Country Club, one of the affected accounts. Mariotti will remain free on bond until he surrenders himself to prison officials next month.
A psychologist who testified at the sentencing hearing said Mariotti had a "Robin Hood" mentality because he took money from the bank to help support bad loans he had made. In one case, he paid off a $45,000 loan, said his attorney, Ron Hamm.
In June, Mariotti waived indictment and pleaded guilty to one count of bank fraud.

Woman accused of frying pan assault

Police have charged a woman with aggravated domestic assault. The aggravating factor? A frying pan. Neighbors called police after hearing a woman screaming as she ran down a street early Sunday.
Police said Jennifer LeeAnn Simoneau, 24, told them her boyfriend had shoved her into a glass table, but she had no visible injuries.
Investigators said her boyfriend Robert Eugene Davis was found bleeding from several cuts on his face and arms and he told police Simonseau had attacked him with a frying pan.
Davis' 11-year-old daughter told police that after the attack on her dad ended, he ran from the house. She said her mother dragged her by the hair to a bedroom.
That got Simoneau a citation for domestic assault on a minor. The arresting officer reported Simoneau appeared to be drunk.

Florida pastor arrested on prostitution charge

The founder and head pastor of a Port St. Lucie church is facing a prostitution charge after an undercover sting.

According to an arrest report, Ronald McCaskill told an undercover police officer who was posing as a prostitute that he would pay $30 for a massage and oral sex.

McCaskill was charged with soliciting prostitution and taken to jail. According to booking records, he later posted bond.

McCaskill and his wife founded a nondenominational Christian church called New Life Christian Center.

Mr. Han, from Zhoukou city in China, was worried about his 10-month-old daughters health. She was diagnosed with Pneumonia but was not recovering.

The Hostpital at Zhengzhou University checked out the girl and diagnosed her with a rare complication of pneumonia called Pyopneumothorax.

After numerous treatments the little girl was still not improving so the doctors decided surgery was the only option. However surgery revealed something even the doctors had never seen before.
Mr. and Mrs. Han claim that the grass is the same kind growing outside of their home and the doctors determined that the baby must have inhaled some grass seed into her lungs. The seed, finding the environment suitable, started to grow.

They removed the grass and the little girl’s health improved and she recovered from her illness.

Man, 106, marries woman, 81, in Wenzhou

Sometimes when people get old they stop looking for love. These two lovely seniors in China did the opposite when they got married recently.
Pan Xiting, 106 years-old, and Chen Adi, 81 years-old, met eight years ago and just recently were married.

Pan’s first wife had passed away more than 20 years ago and Chen’s ex-husband died 11 years ago. They deny their love was at first sight, but grew over time as Chen was taking care of Pan.
The couple is one of the oldest to have ever been married and were three years short of their combined age from taking the Guinness World Record.
Record or not it is a great story of love and youth of heart and we wish them the best of luck.

Vietnamese Government loses $8,000,000 to Football Bets

Sports gambling has become a huge problem in Vietnam, but this might be the worst case yet. Various Government officials and civil servants had gambled aid funding on bets of mainly European Football matches.

The end losses? An estimated $8,197,485 in government funds.

Both President Tran Duc Luong and Prime Minister Phan Van Khai are expected to retire after Vietnam’s 10 National Congress ends on Tuesday, October 30th.

The whole scandal was revealed when a gambler named Bui Tien Dung, who was also a former part of the Ministry of Transport, confessed. Another Transport Minister Dao Dinh Binh resigned two weeks ago due to gambling problems as well.

Since then, a computer office log was found to have 200 Ministry of Transport employees waging government funds. Mr. Dung even had $11,477,838 in savings from all of this before he was jailed.

A wild turkey in Millstone Township, New Jersey dive-bombed a house and then destroyed part of the interior. This past Monday at 3:00 a flock of turkeys was observed casing a residence. At some point, one of the turkeys crashed into a window and broke into the home. New Jersey State police were immediately called. Trooper Richard Pogorzelski entered the home to see if the perpetrator was still lurking about but upon inspection realized the wayward bird had made a getaway - though not a clean one.
According to the home owner, "The bird had relieved himself all over. The room was a disaster." The bird did about $500 in damage to the bedroom of the homeowners' son, 8 year-old Jake. Perhaps not coincidentally, "jake" is what young male turkeys are called by human beings. The infiltrating jake found resident Jake's new $60 Abercrombie & Fitch shirt which he planned wearing to the family's Thanksgiving dinner and pooped all over it. The boy's mother said, "I don't know if it's salvageable."

Bipin said he could not get immediate medical attention for his wife because of his penury and she died the next day. Doctors operated on Lakshmi, the two-year-old girl born with eight limbs. "The surgery has been successful and Lakshmi is stable," said a doctor at the Sparsh Hospital. The little girl, is now recovering after a team of more than 30 surgeons in Bangalore worked to remove the twin's limbs and organs and separate the fused spines.
